A lesser known area a little off the beaten path of the typical north shore visit is that of the Castle Danger area of Lake County.? Check out these state parks and trails to experience the best of Lake County wilderness:

Gooseberry Falls with it's five phenomenal waterfalls, river gorge, Lake Superior shoreline, historic Civilian Conservation Corps log and stone structures, and north woods wildlife make this destination a sightseer's favorite. The visitor center on the grounds offers naturalist and interpretative programs and exhibits, hiking, (18 miles and part of the Superior Hiking Trail), mountain biking (12 miles of dirt trails), fishing and birding, to name a few.

Tettegouche State Park is home to spectacular overlooks at Shovel Point; rocky, steep cliffs and inland bluffs; cascading 60 ft. high falls of the Baptism River; and a hiker's paradise with miles of trails that overlook the Sawtooth Mountains and weaver their way inland to lakes accessible only by foot.  Two trout lakes complement the fishing opportunities within the park. Also known for its' rock climbing opportunities and superior bird watching in the spring, summer, and especially fall.
Gitchi Gami Bike Trail is a premier recreational, non-motorized, paved trail providing visitors with a safe alternative to riding on Hwy 61. A bicycling destination not to be missed, the Gitche Gami Bike Trail connects communities, state parks and attractions all along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

The Superior Hiking Trail is a 205-mile long footpath that follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior from Two Harbors to the Canadian border.? The Superior Hiking Trail is ideal for day hikes as there are no fees, reservations or permits required to hike or backpack the trails. Dogs are permissible but must be leashed at all times.

Split Rock Lighthouse, situated on Lake Superior and best known for its historic lighthouse, also features scenic trails along the lake linking up to the Superior Hiking Trail. Anglers can fish for lake trout, salmon, and brown trout. The rocky beach is perfect for a quiet afternoon of skipping stones into Lake Superior.
